Why Canadian?
Our global reputation as peace-keepers allows Canadians to cross more borders without interference than any other nationality. This unique reputation is extremely beneficial as natural and environmental disasters do not always occur within politically acceptable boundaries. Canada, as a nation, has some of the most modern rural communications systems in the world. As Canadians, we have access to more information than any other nation in the world.
Why was TEERS founded?
In the early fall of 1989, at the suggestion of an Environmental Engineer from the Environmental Emergency Section, Ministry of the Environment, Government of British Columbia, we began the design of The Environmental Emergency Response System.
The challenge was to develop an international response system for both natural and man-made environmental emergencies that would become the parent organization, coordinating any future systems. The Environmental Emergency Response System shares, with The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and other international agencies, the priority of human resource development. Preliminary work on the system was completed and successfully implemented during the Gulf War.
Further work was delayed due to lack of funding, the awaited launch in 1995 of a new Canadian Doppler Radar Satellite system known as RadarSat plus further development of the technology now known as the World Wide Web.
